The language of Zaghawa is a Nilo-Saharan language and is part of the East Saharan branch. It is spoken by the people of Zaghawa. Natives of the language, refer to it as Beria. There are 270,000 native speakers and over 1 million speakers of the language, primarily from within the Chad and Darfur areas of Sudan.
The three main dialects of the language are Tuba, Kube and Wagi.
An alphabet was created for the Zaghawa language in the 1950’s, and it was based on what is often referred to as the camel alphabet. The phoneme was based on Arabic language. An improved version of the alphabet was created in 2000 and this was named as Beria Giray Erfe. An Arabic script alphabet is also being created and this has been based on the Tijani system from the 13th century.
The classification of Zaghawa is Nilo-Saharan, Saharan and Eastern. It falls under the East Saharan branch of languages.
There is a nine-vowel system in the Zaghawa language, including the advanced tongue root vowel harmony. Five tones exist in the phonology of the language, with these being high, low, mid, rising and falling. Words are usually short within the language.
